Powers Fire & Rescue personnel attended the “Approaching Alzheimer’s - First Responder Education” training class on Tuesday at South Central Place in Laurel.
The training was sponsored by South Central Regional Medical Center and EMServ Ambulance Service. The training was conducted by Kristen White, who is the program manager for the Mississippi Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
First-responders were provided with training on how to recognize the 10 early warning signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s or other dementia. In addition, various video scenarios were presented showing first-responders interacting with individuals presenting signs and symptoms or Alzheimer’s and the recommended appropriate responses.
Powers volunteer firefighters and emergency medical responders routinely interact with patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia during responses to emergency incidents.
The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and is a fatal disease that leads to loss of brain cells and function.
